A video game to improve critical thinking and empower young people to navigate the media with confidence.
With the diversity of the European political and economic landscape and the rapid rise of new technologies, navigating the online world has never been more difficult. We are constantly surrounded by media and we all feel overwhelmed by the sheer amount of information. However, it is not always easy to filter out the noise in order to think critically and make informed decisions. That is why, in today’s fast-paced society, media literacy is more important than ever to safeguard democracy and counter misinformation. All European citizens deserve to have the skills necessary to decode information and media influence. But how can we ensure that no one is left behind?
Our Pixel Media project is here to address this important issue.
Our key proposal is to create a video game designed to educate young people, helping them to become not only “digital natives,” but also media-literate individuals. Video games have become a powerful educational tool and, let’s face it, “everyone has played one at some point” (and if you haven’t, it’s time to give it a try!).
Video games are much more than a form of entertainment; they are a unique opportunity for players to actively participate, experiment, and learn in a safe and controlled environment. Unlike traditional learning methods, video games put players in the driver’s seat: they make decisions, see the consequences of their actions, and adjust their strategies at their own pace. This autonomy fosters deeper learning experiences and helps players develop key social skills such as communication, collaboration, time and stress management, leadership, and resilience.
So the answer to “why choose a video game?” is quite simple…
Because it empowers learners. Video games provide immersive, interactive spaces where users are free to explore, make mistakes, and grow. With Pixel Media, we are harnessing this power to make media literacy accessible and truly engaging.
Following the game, we will provide a set of pedagogical resources to enhance the learning experience. These resources will be designed to guide both educators and students throughout their journey through the media landscape. We offer practical guidelines, ready-to-use activity plans, and interactive activities, all tailored to diverse learners and different educational settings.
Our commitment to strengthening media and information literacy aligns with the growing need to equip young people with the skills necessary to navigate, analyze, and critically influence the digital world. In an era where news shapes public discourse and personal interactions, fostering the development of informed, responsible, and ethical citizens is no longer optional—it is essential to the future of democracy and social cohesion.
Through Pixel Media, we empower young people to question, interpret, and actively participate in the media landscape, ensuring that they become both critical consumers and responsible creators of information. Pixel Media is a Creative Europe project co-funded by the European Union, bringing together the expertise of a diverse consortium that includes ALMA MATER STUDIORUM
