Score a Goal!

Score a Goal Against Hate Speech: A Goal for Inclusion

Across Europe, more and more young people—especially those from minority groups or who are active in social debates—are being targeted by online hate speech. The Hate Trackers Into Action (HTIA) project seeks to empower young people to combat this problem by promoting civic participation, diversity, and democratic values.

Within this framework, Hate Trackers Spain carried out the activity “Score a Goal Against Hate Speech,” an original initiative that combined sports and activism to raise awareness about hate speech.

A match against hate

The idea started with designing T-shirts with positive messages such as “Less Hate, More Love,” intended to spread the project’s message. To distribute them in a dynamic and meaningful way, a small challenge was organized: each participant had three attempts to score a goal; if they succeeded, they won a T-shirt and the opportunity to learn more about HTIA.

The activity, held in an informal setting such as the beach, allowed for dialogue between young people, families, and older people. Through play and direct contact, the SGYG team was able to share experiences about hate on social media, cyberbullying, and how to deal with it on a daily basis.

A simple gesture, a powerful message

Beyond sport, the activity generated awareness, connection, and participation. “Score a Goal Against Hate Speech” showed that with creativity and closeness, it is possible to stand up to hate and gain support in building a more inclusive society.

At Hate Trackers Spain, we will continue to promote actions that inspire young people to take a stand against hate speech, both online and offline.
